cept by special arrangement with the Great Plains Com-
pany. but it would seem quite possiole to arrange to
deliver water from the Adobe or Horse Creek Reser-
voirs to the Kicking Bird Canal for delivery m the King
Reservoir at such times as the KickH"!o Bird was not in
'"'
use. This can be done without carrying such water into
the Queen Reservoir at all. by building a very short by-
pass, less than half a mile long, from the Satanta feeder
canal to the King Reservcir.

THE QUEEN RESERVOIR.

The interest of the Company in the Queen Reservoir is
merely that of a joint tenant, with a right to receive from
it annually a mixed quantity of \vater, being 30% of the
estimated capacity of the King Reservoir, or 5,483 acre-
feet, after deducting !oss by seepage and evaporation.
It is a sufficient interest, hovvever. to necessitate a de-
scription. It has an extreme length of 3 miles, and a
breadth of 1-1 '2 miles. and its high water contour is 9
miles long, at an elevation of 3,898 feet above sea-ieveL
It covers a surface area of 1930 acres, and has a total
capacity of 32.985 acre-feet, of whCh 23.046 acre-feet
are avai!able, in the upper 23 feet of the lake, the res-
ervoir has been formed by joining two natural lakes by
a cut, and by building an earth dam 3,000 feet long, 18
feet maximum height, 16 feet wide on top. The slopes
are 1 on 2-1 '2 on the inner side, and 1 on 1-112 on
outer side. The water slope is rip-rapped with 12 to 16
inches of limestone rock to secure it against the eros,ve
action of waves and ice. The outlet to the reservoir is a
cut near the center of the dam, at the lowest part of the
rim of the basin, in which are laid the outlet pipes. The

53
