DISTRIBUTION OF WATER RIGHTS.

The water rights are distributed over the land in a some-
what irregular way. There are 20,000 acres provided
with what is designated as "full water rights," entitling
the owner to an aHotrrent of 1 .44 cubic feet oer second
I

of time for each 80 acres. or an average duty of 55.55
acres per second-foot. To satisfy this class of rights
360 cubic feet of \vater are required. The lands to which
these full rights are applied are chiefly !ocated in the
Vllestern Divis~on, west of Gageby Arroyo. The area to
which held rights are applied is 48.000 acres, using 432
cub;c feet per second, an average duty of 111.1 aces
per second-foot. The remaining area of 10,600 acres
has rights to 132.5 second-feet. or at an average fate of
80 acres per second-foot. in addition to these quant-
ties Mr. Kreybi!l informs me that r,,1r. J. R. ivluivane owns
a right to 23 second-feet which is not as yet applied to
any specific tract of land.

The total number of shares of stock in the Company
issued to the landowners of the district is 94,693.6, leav-
ing 10,306.4 shares stiii in the Treasury.

As far as I was able to ascertain, the lands provided
with half rights. or \vater at the rate of 1.44 second-feet
per 150 acres, were quite sufficiently irrigated, and as
abundantly provided vlith ,",vater as is necessary for all
ordinary crops, except. possibly, in years of extreme
drought, for which the full water rights are entitled to the
privilege of selling as many of their shares to the own-
ers of dry land as they may see fit to part with. Thls sort
of barter and subdivision of rights has been in progress
for some time, and in this way the area of the irrigated

,-
~J
