feet per second, this point is 100 miles from the
headgate, and is practicaily the end of the canal as far
as general service is concerned, although a small quan-
tity of water is still carried through to the extreme end
to serve one irrigator who has a water right on Big Sandy.
This lower portion of the canal is, therefore, merely a
farm lateral to all intents and purposes, and there is
excessive loss by seepage and evaporation in supply-
ing this water right over such an unusual distance.

GENERAL DIMENSIONS.

From the headgate to Gageby the bottom width is 50
feet, and the full depth of water carried is 6 feet. From
Gageby to Graveyard Creek the bottom width is 20.5
feet. And the depth is maintained at 6 feet. From Grave-
yard Creek to the end, at vVheatridge Lateral, the depth
is reduced to 4 feet, and the bottom width is but 10 feet.
These are the dimensions given by the Superintendent.

AREA COMMANDED.

The total area of land lying under the Fort Lyon Cana~,
from its head to Big Sandy Creek, between the canal
and the north bank of the river, excluding the area un-
der the Amity Canal, is approximately 157,477 acres.
This was determined by planimeter measurement on
the large map of the Valley in the Company's office.

The total area under the canal to which water rights are
applied is 78,600 acres, or a little less than half of the
area commanded, assuming that all land under the ca-
nal could be classed as irrigable.

24
