Remote Readers
Erie offers a remote reader service to all customers who contact the town concerned
that their water bill is abnormally high. Erie staff will temporarily provide the
customer with a remote reader. This remote reader records the amount of water
being used and can detect leaks.

Public Education Program
Erie began to educate its customers on their water supply, water rates, and the
importance of water conservation in 2002. A variety of media/venues have been used
to distribute information to customers. These include:

. Informative and Understandable water bill - Erie bills its customers based on the
volume of water used. The water bill shows customers the amount of water used
per month and also the amount of water used the previous year for the same
month. This enables customers to compare their water usage on a monthly basis.
The water bill also provides a phone number for customers to call regarding
questions concerning their bill. Erie's website also has an interactive demonstration
explaining each item on the water bill.

. Website - Erie's website provides a variety of information regarding water.
Information is provided on water related infrastructure projects, water rates, water
restrictions, as well as on the water wasting ordinance. Background/ contact
information is also available on the water audit program as well as links to
web sites that give additional information on water conservation. See
http://www.ci.erie.co.us/.

. Elementary School Education - For three years, Erie has annually provided a three-
day water education program from fourth and fifth graders. Topics include:
equipment safety, water treatment, stormwater, and water conservation.

. Email distribution list - Residents may sign up to receive regularly distributed
emails summarizing town Board meetings as well as other pertinent news.
Information concerning water conservation and water restrictions has been
conveyed to the public through this system.

Parks Department Conservation Efforts
Since 2002, Erie's parks department has gradually adopted a variety of practices that
has improved their irrigation efficiency on existing parks. This includes the
following:

· Improved soil preparation for plantings and grass establishment,

· Using a cycle soak method to irrigate turf improving irrigation effectiveness
and efficiency,

· Planting native vegetation and drought tolerant plants where appropriate, and

· Irrigate parks in the evenings and at night when evaporation is low.

Erie's park department also meters their irrigation and is charged by Erie for their
water usage. This provides a financial incentive to conserve water.

T:\9228 - Erie\Conservation Plan\Completion Reports\50% Completion Report.doc
