Multi-year Relationships:
(Upper Colorado-Division 4/ Gunnison – Division 5/Yampa-White
Division 6)
A final component of this study was the analysis of multi-year results of winter
precipitation, spring precipitation and peak seasonal runoff in sections of the Upper
Colorado (and major tributaries), the Yampa/White and Gunnison River basins. A map
Figure 22
of these basins can be found in . For this section, the results will be presented
by 1) The 2-year variable examined and 2) A brief basin-by-basin summary of the
relevant HCI values for each variable.
Figure 22. Map of the analyzed basins for the Upper Colorado, Gunnison and Yampa-White River
Basins.
December to March Precipitation:
Upper Colorado (River above Kremmling):
The only HCI variable that exhibited any reasonable correlation with the 2-year
winter precipitation average was the PDO. A look at the correlation graphs shows that
although the negative years are aligned with greater precipitation values they exhibit
quite a bit of scatter. However, positive years do strongly tie to average (at best) to
below average precipitation in this basin. All other factors (AMO included) did not
exhibit much in the way of strong correlations in this area.
35
