inspection decal would be fully inspected and if necessary directed to the nearest boat
decontamination station if any suspected infestation is found.
Increase Educa.tion/Information
We will evaluate and implement additional signing at state operated waters, very high
and high risk waters based on the risk assessment, watercraft owner/operator notification,
web-site information, and statewide threat campaign efforts.
VIII. PUEBLO STATE FISH HATCHERY
The Pueblo State Hatchery Unit is immediately downstream from Pueblo Reservoir. A
primary source of water for this facility is from the Arkansas River. There is the
potential for zebra mussel veligers to be drawn into the hatchery along with normal water
operations. Hatchery staff continue to monitor the water and inspect for adult zebra
mussel infestation; tadate none have been detected. There are known treatment methods
to alleviate the risk of transporting mussel veligers or adults in fish hauling tank water.
Any fish destined for stocking will be held in separate raceways that are on well-water
for two weeks. The raceway water and fish will be treated with Potassium Chloride at
concentrations known to be lethal to mussel veligers and adults during this time.
Additionally, when the fish aze loaded into the hauling tank (filled with well-water) on
the stockin~ truck, the tank water and fish will receive an additional treatment with
Formalin at concentrations known to be lethal to mussel veligers and adults. Then these
fish may be safely transported to other waters for stocking.
There is the potential for zebra/quagga mussel species to show up at other state/federal
fish hatchery units as well as private aquaculture facilities. This situation could arise as a
specific detection of mussel adults or veligers on a unit or the presence of mussel adults
or v~ligers in the hatchery water supply or upstream from a ha.tchery unit as in the case of
Pueblo Hatchery. CDOW and USFWS will conduct a risk assessment analysis of their
hatchery utits and develop recommendations to prevendcontrol and/or eradicate mussel
infestation.
IX. RECOMMENDATIONS
Monitorin~
1. Develop a risk assessment approach to prioritize increased efforts to monitor
Colorado water bodies. Cooperate and coordination with other state, federal,
recreational and water owner stakeholders.
2. The CDOW's Aquatic Research unit should design a statistically-based sampling
protocol to efficiently increase the probability of detection. Waters will be
selected and prioritized based in part on a statewide recreational watercraft risk
assessment for lakes and reservoirs.
