fC__-l!'.~;!;:..tcd_Fr::mi. _~o::ig;: ';'_'

scapes are designs
that have taken their
cues from nature.
These informal designs
are reflections of cas-
ua living, allowing gar-
deners to include flow-
ering plants in and
around their surround-
ings in ways that go
beyond a traditional
perennial border.
When native plants are
used, gardeners renew
and develop the unique
character of their re-
gion and community. As
these distinctive land-
scapes evolve they
create a diverse envi-
ronment that encour-
ages soil, water and
wildlife habitat con-
servation.
A Xeriscape philoso-
phy blends perfectly
with the conservation
ethic that is fast be-
coming part of our
everyday lives. And in
arid Colorado, the fo-
cus of conservation is,
of course, on water.

II-
II-
II

Written by Jean Van Pelt.
Maintenance and Education
Program Coordinator

. .
t/G.&4 Cc=r.rir;uedfj-c;m page j j

challenged from its inception.

The various aspects of the IGA are as follows:

- KO '!\E\V PER.\rlAI\E)iT \\.ater taken out of the Arkansas Basin
during the life of the IGA (at least 40 years).
- Maximum of 54,000 a.f. a year can be transferred through Otero
Pump Station.
. ylaximum of 145.200 a.f. of interruptible supply water over 40
years life of the IGA 0,630 a.f. per year average): with addi-
tional stipulations in regard to conservation measurements, water
pricing, at a less than 60 percent of reservoir storage capacity.
. During the first 25 years of the IGA. Aurora will not use inter-
ruptible supply contracts for more than three years in each 10-
year period.
. During the last 15 years, Aurora may elect to make up any short-
fall of 145.200 a.f. limit using the following options:
~ 5 of 10 year interruptible supply, or
~ 7 of 15 year interruptible supply (not to exceed 10,000 a.f
per year)
. The District will establish a SOFTENING POOL to alleviate the
1874 Rocky Ford call above the Rocky Ford headgate.
The District will have a \o10U with the Upper Arkansas Water
Conservancy District.
The District will establish a Regional Resource Development
Group to identify regional opportunities and establish priorities
to guide implementation of those recommended plans.
- The District will benefit over S50 plus million.

In connection with the IGA is the ongoing effort to pass legislation
to approw a feasibility study for the Preferred Storage Options Plan
(PSOP). \Vith the signing of the IGA. Aurora has agreed to back leg-
islation for the enlargement of the Project. The Project enlargement
was part of our original forefathers requirements to adhere to future
\\'ater needs. 'Ylany communities suffered regrettable consequences
from the drought and have realized future water planning is essen-
tial. The PSOP was formed so that communities can plan for future
\\'ater needs.
The Fry-Ark Project has given us a legacy that demonstrates what
cooperation can achieve. This IGA has also upheld that legacy.
Written by James Broderick. General Manager. SECWCD

Congratulations to Jean Van Pelt the District's maintenance &
education program coordinator for the Xeriscape Garden. Jean
has been appointed to the board for the Colorado \Vater Wise
Council. Recently, Jean was selected as secretary for the board.
Jean will represent the southeastern area of Colorado.

5
