The
District IS
taking a major
s ter I his
spri ng to
insure the proper care of the
Xcriscapc Garden. In an effort
to reduce the mainll:nancc cost
of contracting lawn care to
landscapers, the District has
purchased a shed to h<lUse the
equipment needed to maintain
its own gardening equipment.
The garden coordinator will
assume the care of the turf areas
this year.
The garden's education
program is steadily growing.
The purpose of the
Demonstration Xcriscape
Garden is to edUC,lte others on
the concl..'pts of xeriseapc and to
demonstrate that a xcriscape

landscape can be functional and
beautiful. The garden
coordinator has dcveloped a
slide presentation that illustrates
how 10 conserve
water in our
landscapes. The
presentation
explains the scven
xerlscape
principles and
ways to be
successful at
xcrlscape
gardening. The
coordinator has
also put together a
slide presentation
that focuses on
water conserving
plants. This
presentation
features phlllts
that fluurish III
our semiarid
climate, as well
as, emphasizes on
selecting and
using plants that
have perfomlcd well in the
demonstration garden and in the
1)lant Sclect Program.
The coordinator is available
for presentations at the garden
or will travel for an interested
group. The coordinator also
offers a guided tour of the
demonstration garden. I r
interested, please call Jean Van
Pelt at the District 71 Q-94X~
