The purpose of the Draft Water Requirements and

Availability Study is to quantify the future water requirements of the District over the next 50

years and to determiI1e how much water might be conserved and made available for use by others.

The maximum amount of water that could be conserved in Imperial Valley and made available for

transfer is estimated in the draft study at 405,800 acre-feet a year. The conserved water would

only be available if the District and its landowners/growers have significant financial assistance

from potential users Qfthe conserved water.

The first part of the study defines the estimated District water requirements during the

next 50 years. Future projections for water use in Imperial Valley were based on land use plans of

the County, per capita use with population projections and potential future water requirements for

agriculture and industry. The District's operational needs were also taken into consideration.

By the year 2045, it is expected that the acreage being farmed will decline to 427,600

acres from the 490,000 acres in production today. This reduction of 62,400 acres is due to the

projected increase in urban land use. Without additional conservation measures, the District's

-more-

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT. 333 EAST BARIONI BOULEVARD. P.O. BOX 937 . IMPERIAL, CA 92251 .
