FOG

Fog composed of cloud water droplets cooled below freezing can for days at a time seriously
disrupt or even halt air traffic in the wintertime at several locations in the western U.s. The economic
losses to the affected cities and states can amount to millions of dollars a day, not including the
inconvenience to travelers. Although cloud seeding to dissipate these types of fogs has been used
operationally for decades, the techniques and materials used to treat the fogs can be improved further,
particularly in situations when the fogs exist at temperatures only slightly below freezing.

Summary

The WDMP supports weather research and evaluation relevant to atmospheric water resource
management, and the subsequent transfer of findings to the user. WDMP research programs have
addressed and will continue to address all the scientific research areas that were recently emphasized
as being critical by the National Research Council (NRC, 2003). Partnerships have been developed
among the local project sponsors, university researchers, state agencies, regional forecasting centers,
private industry, and damage mitigation groups (e.g., emergency management centers, the Institute
for Business and Home Safety, and operational atmospheric resource management programs.)

ODerational AtmosDheric Water Manaaement Proarams

Operational programs to increase rainfall, increase snowpack, reduce hail damage, or disperse
cold fogs are presently being conducted in California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nevada, New
Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. In addition, researchers in other states have
expressed interest in collaborating with eligible states presently having operational programs.

Authors

This document has been prepared and distributed by the membership ofthe North American
Interstate Weather Modification Council (NAIWMC). The NAIWMC is an organization of state
regulatory agencies and project sponsors of cloud seeding activities.
