Water Supply Reserve Account – Grant and Loan Program
Water Activity Summary Sheet

Applicant:
Town of Sawpit
Water Activity Name:
Water Distribution Improvement Project
Amount Requested:
$25,000
Source of Funds:
Basin Account
Matching Funds:
$6,700
Water Activity Purpose:
Study of consumptive project. Engineering/Planning for Improvements to
Existing Domestic Water System
County:
San Miguel
Drainage Basin:
Southwest
Water Source:
Nelson Spring

Water Activity Summary:

The Town of Sawpit (Town) is requesting a grant for surveying and engineering to replace its aging domestic
water distribution lines.

Sawpit is a statutory town located in San Miguel County, about 10 miles west of the Town of Telluride. The
Town’s population was 25 according to the 2000 census, making Sawpit the third least populous incorporated
town in the Sate of Colorado. The Town was incorporated in 1892 as a Rio Grande Southern rail stop as well as
a mining town. The Town is about .03 square miles in size.

The town is divided by Highway 145 and has about 18 residential water taps and one commercial tap. The
Town is made up of working families; the median income is $26,250 which is well below the state of
Colorado’s median income of $47,203.

Sawpit’s water distribution system is 100 years old, as such, water pipes are rusty and prone to leaks.
Maintenance on the distribution lines is an issue as lines are not mapped and many of the water mains are
located on private property. Although current water quality is in compliance with state standards, water
quality and quantity will likely be an issue in the near future as line rust induced line leaks increase the
likelihood of water quality degradation and supply interruption. The Town estimates that they have between
5,000 and 10,000 feet of distribution line that needs to be replaced.

The Town is planning on working with Buckhorn Geotech, Inc. to complete a survey of existing water lines,
design improvements, determine cost estimates, prepare preliminary and final design drawings and bid
documents for the project.

The Town has received proposals for surveying and engineering work, totaling $31,700, which includes the
following tasks:
1. Surveying waterline location, topographic survey & site plan ($11,700):
?

File, plan & deed research & set up for field survey.
?

Field control survey to locate/establish horizontal and vertical control within the site.
1
