NA WC completed a study for the Santa Barbara County Water Agency (Thompson and Griffith
1988) that assessed the precipitation augmentation potential from seeding winter convection
bands (the basic seeding unit of Santa Barbara II Research Program) over Santa Barbara County.
The assessment was based upon a 61-year period (l920~1980). The main conclusion of the
report was that natural precipitation for the October-April period could optimally be enhanced by
21 to 22 percent at Juncal and Gibraltar Dams through cloud seeding. This percent increase
would add an average of 4.5 to 5.0 inches of precipitation to the average seasonal total. This
study was updated in 1996 (Solak et al. 1996) to extend the period of this analysis from 1981 to
1994. The results of this analysis of this latter period indicated increases of approximately 18
percent at both Juncal and Gibraltar.
