studies, and a PROBE station for telemetering information to the Auburn
Forecast Office. A similar station on the downwind side of the crest will

be made available by DR!, excluding the rawinsonde site.
5. a network of digital precipitation gauges concentrated in the upper
elevations of the American River Basin near Kingvale.
6. a Doppler Acoustic Sounder at Blue Canyon for low level wind studies.
7. mountain weather and icing stations at Squaw Peak, Signal Peak, Sierra

Ski Ranch, and Slide Mountain telemetered via satellite.

8. an observatory in the extended area region for remote sensing, ground

microphysics and snow chemistry observations.

Equipment includes a

scanning Ka radar, scanning radiometer, microphysics observatory, and snow

chemistry observations. These will be provided by DR!.
9. a network of 23 ground-based generators made avai 1 able by SMUD, DR!,
PG&E, and NAWC. Six of these wi 11 be manua 1 (NAWC). The others wi 11 be
operated by remote control.

Additional equipment, including a rawinsonde station at Freshpond and precipi-
tation gauges will be made available by cooperating groups.

The approximate dates for deployment of each major piece of equipment are
shown in figure 1-2. The equipment setup and takedown will be scheduled out-
side these periods.

The i ntens i ve fi e 1 d season for SCPP wi 11 be from 3 November 1986 through 9
January 1987, with possible operational days* occurring seven days a week.

* An operational day is one in which all facilities not routinely staffed with
personnel and equipment not normally operated are brought up to operating sta-
tus and all Bureau and contractor personnel are deployed to their respective
positions. This will be cl'arified in subsequent sections of this plan.

1-2

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
