The methodology of ohemioal kinetios has been reoently applied to

the study of ioe nuoleation by silver iodide aerosol partioles as the

prooess ooours in an isothermal oloud environment (DeMott, 1982, and

DeMott, et al., 1983). Chemioal kinetio methodology oan be used to

define the physioal meohanism of ioe nuoleation by interpreting the

observed changes in rates and yields as funotions of oloud parameters

and aerosol composition.
differs from past studies where the temporal oharaoteristios of the ioe
nuoleation prooess was not inoorporated. Past studies have concentrated

mostly on variations in effeotivity (yield), partioularly in the oase of

silver iOdide-sodium iodide ioe nuclei. Temporal rates of ice

nuoleation by silver iodide-sodium iodide aerosol partioles have not

been olearly determined. The effeot of supersaturation with respeot to

liquid water on ice nuoleation by these aerosol partioles has not been

fully explored. When enoountered in experiments, the effects of

supersaturations were noted. Attempts were usually made to eliminate

the supersaturation rather than try to understand its effeots.
