.

SECTION 5. - PRECIPITATION GAGES

A total of eight Belfort weighing dual-traverse precipitation gages were
operated at six_different sites dur.ing the 1984-85 winter.

Two different sizes of gage orifices were used. To achieve the greatest
resolution, each site was equipped with a gage having a 17.9-inch diameter
orifice (5 times the area of the standard 8-inch opening). This size ori-
fice coupled with the Belfort 12-inch dual-traverse mechanism reduces the
usable gage capacity to about 2.4 inches of water equivalent. All of these
units were operated with electric clocks and daily gears to obtain the best
time resolution possible. In addition, 2 sites (GMO East and GMO West) also
contained gages having 11.3-inch orifices (twice the standard opening) and
weekly gears. These served to obtain data during the few heavy snowfall
periods when the larger orifice gages became overfilled. The data concerning
the gage site identifications, elevations, locations, and operating periods
are contained in Table 5-1 below:

Table 5-1.
