e

III. OBJECTIVES OF SCPP-l

The specific objectives of SCPP-l are:

1. To increase the scientific understanding of natural cloud processes in
orographically modified, wintertime initially nonprecipitation cellular
convection and the alterations in cloud structure and methods of precipi-
tation initiation that occur when such clouds are treated in a prescribed
manner.

2. To estimate, with an acceptable level of confidence, through case
study and statistical evaluation, the treatment effects in the precipita-
tion chain [i .e., from increase in ICC (ice crystal concentration) to
increases in precipitation on the ground] for these convective cloud
types.

3. To estimate the value and impacts of additional precipitation on the
American River Basin.

4. To assess the total area of effect of the precipitation augmentation
activities.

e

5. To develop the baseline information required to design experiments on
other cloud types. Examples of such information are necessary concentra-
tions of artifically induced ice crystals, growth and fallout velocities
of artifically induced precipitation, dispersion rates of seeding agents,
and objective methods of tracking and measuring these parameters within
current observational capabilities.

.

9
