DESCRIPTION

According to available information, the Southside Reservoir outlet pipe,
and the oontaining concrete, were placed between 1921 and 1923. The
concrete surrourrling the outlet pipe is understcx::rl to vary in thickness fran
4 inches to 12 inches, and is oot reinforced. Apparently the metal.pipe was
laid in 16 to 20 foot sections, with each sectioo bLltt jointed and rol ted
with I-foot long steel rolts. Tb~se rolts were placed on each pipe section
at the top, rotten and sides and tightened to provide a secure butt joint.
It also appears that a 3-foot diameter concrete seep collar was poured at
the Ibcatioo of each butt joint (l~igure 1).
At the upstream end of the outlet pipe, 20 feet of the metal pipe and
surrourrling ooncrete was renoved, and replaced by a 15- inch diameter
Schedule 80 PVC pipe. This PVC pipe, installed 00 the 6th of March, 1984,
was not surrounded with concrete, but rather backfilled with soil. The PVC
pipe is joined to the old metal pipe via a 2-foot wide ooncrete oollar which
varies fran 4 to 6 inches thick.
Fran the crest of the embankrnE~t, 73 feet upstream fran the downstream
em of the outlet pipe;-there is. cl rnanway through the embankment dCMI1. to the
outlet pipe.

FI]~ PRl:EOORE

Three separate logging tools Vi'ere used: sonic log,' ganma, garcma-ganma
and caliper log (all in one tool), and neutron log. A separate run was made
for each tool. Each tool was attached to a cable, which had. been strung
through the outlet pipe, and then fUlled fran the upstream to the downstream
em of the outlet pipe. The tool was then set to read zero footage (which
is registered on all the logs as a depth of 150 feet) at the downstream end
of the outlet pipe, and mechanically pulled by the logging truck back to the
upstream end of the outlet pipe. 'The logs were obtained dur ing the fUlling
operation. During logging operations, 4 to 6 inches of water was flCMing in
the outlet pipe.

-2-
