'lhis MaHer Plan will
cover an approximate 40 mile stretch of
Foumain Creek from the southern Colorado
Springs city limits to the confluence with the
Arkansas. '111e five goals of this project arc to:
I. Improve watershed health by reducing
erosion, sedimentation & Hooding and
improving water quality.
2. Create stable riparian & wetland ecosys-
tems to amact & suPPOrt native wildlife
and vegetation.
3. Sustain productive agriculrurallands
along the corridor.
4. Layout trail from Colorado Springs to
Pueblo with recreational/educational
opportun ities.
5. Gain public and private support through
partnerships to facilitate implementation
and future funding.

'Ihis project will be done in cooperation with
the Corps of Engineers and the Fountain
Crcek Vision Task Force. Public comment
on a draft master plan will be sought in the
second quarter of 2008. 111C emire project
will be completed in the fourth quarter of
2009.

Fountain Creek flowing through Manitou
Springs. As part of thcir efforts, a master
. plan has been developed and is available on
thc website. 111e plan discusses conditions in
upper Fountain Creek, rcstoration goals, and
projects.

. i;unding has becn obtained for the first
. demonstration projCct, a section of Fountain
Creek through Soda Springs Park in Manitou
Springs. The demonstration projcCt is
expected to be completcd during summer
months of2008.

Upcoming restoration projects include
Fountain Creck through Fields Park at the
west edge of Manitou Springs, and rebuilding
the inlct structure of Shriver Pond.

Colorado Front Range
Trail Planning: Fountain to
Pueblo

By juniper Katz, Colorado Open Lands

Colorado Open Lands obtained a $35,000
grant from Colorado State Parks to examine
thc unfinished section of the Front Range
Trail from Fountain to Pueblo. "lhe goal of
this project is to permanently conserve land
along the Fountain Crcek corridor betwecn
Fountain and Pueblo, and plan for a trail
corridor that will connect the Fountain Creek
Corridor with segments of the Colorado
Front Range Trail alrcady planned. 'Ihe ob-
. jectives in this proposed project are to:
1, Gain a more thorough understanding
of other ongoing trail planning e(forts
in ordcr to minimize rcdundancy and
maximize strengths of each entity.

2. Coordinate these existing efforts.

3. Idcntify and meet with landowncrs to
begin trail negotiations for future acqui-
sition.

4. Complete a Fountain Creek Trail
Segment Final Report that will provide
partnership and landscape contexts for
creating a trail along the Fountain Creek
corridor, and will identity no more than
two trail alignment recommendations.

This project began in January 200H and a
final rcport will he issued by December 2009.
