Meeker lies 45 mile southwest of
Craig, 39 miles northeast of Rifle and 50 miles east of Rangely
in northwestern Colorado. The White River is a tributary to the
Green River, a basin of the Colorado River (map 1).

Meeker is situated at 6300 feet elevation, it has a frost
free period of 2 1/2 months, its annual average temperature is
'440 F and it experiences 16.8 inches of precipitation annually.

Meeker is 90 years old. The Town water system dates from
1906. Meeker is governed by a Mayor and Town Council and is
organized under the laws of the State of Colorado. The Town has
carefully managed its financial resources over the years, current
outstanding indebtedness being approximately $ 73,000. 'rhe water
,utili ty is municipally owned, the sewer utility is owned and
operated by the Meeker Sanitation District, and the primary
source of revenue for the Meeker general fund is from a mill
levy.

Meeker encompasses a total area of 660 acres with a
residential density of 0.91 units per acre. There are currently
687 water taps on the municipal system.

Future growth of Meeker would be slow and steady if it were
not for pending oil shale development. Without such development,
it is anticipated that the current population of 1,700 would grow
to 1,900 people by 1990. Due to the influence of the energy
crisis, Colorado Division of Planning consultants in 1972
estimated Meeker's population at 7,850 by 1990, the majority of
this growth occurring within the next seven years. A September,
1974, computer program population forecast by the State of
Colorado indicates a peak of 5,181 people in 1979 with high
impact from oil shale, falling to 5,000 by 1985. For this
report, a population of 7,850 by 1990 has been used.

130
meeker
