Future water development on the South and North Platte Rivers could threaten the
continued existence of the whooping crane, piping plover, least tern, and pallid sturgeon. In order to address ESA concerns, a
13-year cooperative program to address past and future water development is being developed . Colorado will contribute 27,000
acre feet of water on an average annual basis, consistent with Colorado water law, for mitigation related to past water
development. Future water development will also need to consider species and habitat issues.
This is part of the CWCB's continuing effort to help
communities determine whether their existing water
supplies are adequate. This latest effort began in 1999
with a conservation survey of local governments,
publication and distribution of a dam site inventory,
and series of ineetings in each major water basin. Tasks
yet to be completed include the publication of water
information fact sheets, a drought planning assessmentl
carry-over storage assessment, and these preliminary
growth and water demand projection fact sheets. These
materials and others are available at our website.
South Platte River Basin Projected Future Water Demands ',~(5~'7~
Water DemandslDiversions
Native Supply
- ~Irrigation CU
M unicipal CU
Total Surface Water Available
~Total CU
March 2002
South Platte Basin Population by County ~2~
