The six water supply wells in the north system have a combined annual appropriation amount of
397 acre-feet per year (af/yr). Of the 397 of/yr, a total of 190 of/yr can be pumped from wells 4,
5, 6, and 7. Well #5 has historically supplied 60 of/yr, or approximately 30% of the allowable
190 of/yr from wells #4-7. Hence, it is critical to re-drill Well #5 to maintain an adequate water
supply system for Bennett.
Project Description
The purpose of this project is to re-drill Well #5 so that Bennett can continue providing reliable
and high quality water to its residents. Three alternatives were considered for the project
including:
1. Noaction alternative
2. Rehabilitation of existing well
3. Re-drill the well
Alternative 1, No-action alternative -This was not an acceptable option since operation of the
well is imperative to meeting water supply demands of the town.
Alternative 2, Rehabilitation of existing well -This was not selected because the existing well
casing has deteriorated beyond the point of rehabilitation.
Alternative 3, Re-drill Well #5- This was the selected alternative since the well is a critical part
of the Bennett water supply system. Re-drilling the well will help the town maintain adequate
water service to its residents.
Selected Alternative
The preferred alternative is to re-drill Well #5. The well has been a critical and reliable part of
the Bennett water supply system for over 34 years. The Colorado Division of Water Resources
has issued a permit to drill a replacement well within 200 feet of the existing well, and no
additional legal actions will be required.
The Total Project cost is estimated to be:
1. Consulting $ 20,000
2. Re-Drilling/Completing Well $ 260,000
TOTAL
$ 280,000
Schedule -With Well #5 inoperable, Bennett will likely be unable to meet the water demands
during the summer months in 2008. It is therefore critical to re-drill and complete Well #5
before next summer. The project was bid in December of 2007. A construction contract was
executed with Henkle Drilling & Supply. Construction is expected to commence in late January
of 2008.
