had precipitation totals that were less than 0.05 inch. Because
of their relatively minor impact on the storm total these
were classified as "Minor" precipitation episodes. Of the
remaining 100 episodes, 70 percent had precipitation totals
between 0.05 and 0.50 inches. These were classified "Moderate"
precipitation episodes while the remaining 30 precipitation
episodes, which had totals greater than 0.50 inches, were
classified as "Major" precipitation episodes.

The Minor episodes averaged only 2.2 hours in duration
(median 2 hours) with a maximum duration of 8 hours and a
minimum of 1 hour. They also averaged only 0.017 inches of
precipitation per episode with a median of 0.01 inch. The
Moderate precipitation episodes had a mean duration of 7.5
hours (median 6 hours) with a maximum duration of 22 hours
and a minimum also of 1 hour. Total precipitation during
these episodes averaged 0.17 inches per episode but the median
was only 0.12 inches. The Major precipitation episodes lasted
21.6 hours on the average, with a median of 21 hours. The
longest episode lasted 50 hours and the shortest was of 8
hour duration. Precipitation totals during these episodes
was significant averaging 1.31 inches with a median of 0.90
inches. Maximum precipitation totaled 4.30 inches at Baker
Lake during a 38 hour long episode in the February 23-26 storm
while the minimum episode total was 0.55 inches. It is noteworthy
that at each of the seven gauge sites the maximum precipitation
episode during the entire field season occurred during the
February 23-26 storm.

It should be emphasized that all of these episodes occurred
at individual gauge sites during storm periods and the so
called Minor episodes usually represent those periods when

3-49

I
t
,
f
1
I
I
I
t
,
f
I
I
I
t
I
,
I
I
