~

~
" J

On the Colorado River most of the commercial rafting occurs downstream of Gore Canyon and
so below the UPCO study area. Gore Canyon is a difficult and dangerous section of the River
for commercial rafting, but is being utilized commercially more often now. Flows from the
UPCD study area are essential for commercial operation in Gore Canyon and on downstream.
Commercial rafters are able to accommodate a wide range of Colorado River flows. Following
is a description of the commercial rafting flow needs for the Colorado River below Kremmling.
Flows in Gore Canyon adequately describe the flow needs downstream.

Gore Canyon

Low Water:
High Water:

Approx. 400 c.f.s.
Approx. >11,000 c.f.s.

Optimum:

2,000-3,000 c.f.s.

Comments:

The Colorado River gage at Kremmling is located at the upper end
of the Gore Canyon with no additional diversions in the canyon.
Therefore, the Kremmling gage should accurately reflect
conditions in the Gore Canyon.

Information provided by Nick Quintana, Monarch Guides

(Most recreational activities in Grand COWlty occur on the Upper Colorado for example from
Pumphouse to Rancho Del Rio.)

C:\2001 UPCO\UPCO Report on Rafting F1ows.doc
