- 3 -

. Reservoir Stora2e - Reservoir is 100% of average at the end of April statewide. This is the best
we have seen in a long time. The last 12 months the Gunnison has had the largest storage. We
are expecting average to go down as demand goes up.
. Streamflow Forecasts - Best outlook is the Blue River, Eagle River, and Yampa Rivers. Most
of the State shares the decline in streamflow as a result of the dry April.

Percent of Average

."50
.,30,'50

~NRCS

Colorado Streamflow Forecast Map

110-129

Natural Resource5
Conservl1tion Service

.90.,09
.70...
.50.""
.'SO

ProvrSlOnaJ Dara
SubJecf to ReMs/on

Current as of May 1, 2006

.
. Remaining snow throughout the state is generally above 10,500 ft.

Colorado Climate Center CSU (Nolan Doesken)
Nolan identified several monstrous historical storms throughout Colorado that were not snowmelt
events. Many of the mentioned events had greater than 10-inches of rain over a period of a day that
resulted in large flows. Big storms occur in wet or dry years, any year. Most storms occurring in May
and June are widespread and longer lasting, and later in the year they become more localized and
intense. There is enough background to know that a storm is coming, the exact location of where the
storm will occur is difficult to determine.

Nolan cautioned that although the focus of the FTF is generally on snowmelt, it is rain-induced events
that have historically caused the largest problems. Although they can occur anytime from April through
October, there tends to be two peak periods -last week of May/first week of June and last week of
July/first week of August.

. Nolan is in charge of the CoCoRas project that has brings in over 800 rain gage reports regularly.
Information about it is at http://www.cocorahs.org/

Flood Protection .
