North Platte Basin Roundtable Meeting Minutes, 11.27.2007 2
Denise noted that the Heritage Program may be able to provide this roundtable with data
and information to help make decisions within the basin.
The CNHI' rai~lcs species according to their conservation status: global rai~lc of 1-5, then
rai~lced according to Colorado status (S 1-SS). 1 means very rare (five or less lc~7own
occurrences), 5 means many occurrences.
An occurrence = a population in most cases, but the definition varies between species.
Denise stressed that the cheapest way to find out about water resources is to look at your
plants. Plants and soil are good indications of water quality and quantity.
Denise handed out a list of all the known species, from a CNHI' standpoint, that occur in
the North Platte watershed.
Wetland species of co~ce~~r ij~~ the Noah Platte Bas~ira:
Boreal toad
Wood frog
Greenback and cutthroat trout
Ripariai~/wetland plant conununities
Pale blue-eyed grass
Unique sedges
Sundew
aquatic plants
Denise spoke about how CNHI' collects data on private lands:
Can gain access to private property only with written permission
Information dissemination: landowner has control over process; landowner can agree or
disagree to destroy data, or to release data no finer than 4 square miles, or in a sensitive
case, 9 square miles.
Who has access to CNHI''s data? Consultants, federal agencies, etc. There is some free
data on CNHI''s website.
Discussion about CNHI' possibly coming to the roundtable for grant money:
The roundtable can get back to Denise if this warrants a proposal, to begin a project as
soon as March 2008.
Denise estimated: $150,000 to do a basin-wide survey, plus $60,000 to do uplands,
$200,000 total.
The roundtable wanted an example of how CNHI''s plant surveys are going to relate to
watershed plaiuling.
Denise: find the plant, draw a polygon of what processes are supporting this plant, and
steer development away from the wetland. CNHI' would also prioritize the polygons as
potential conservation areas. B 1 site= outstanding significance, in need of protection.
Carl Trick II brought up a question about peer review, does CNHI' have peer reviewers?
