<br />Task 11 <br />A W A proposes to use the ESRI ArcView GIS in the project to compute the site- <br />specific PMP for Cherry Creek. However to evaluate the NWSSS, the GRASS GIS <br />software must be acquired and installed on the A W A computer system. A W A will install <br />and use the GRASS GIS to evaluate the NWSSS. <br /> <br />Task 12 <br />Task VII in the RFP asks for different methodologies to be identified which could <br />potentially provide improved procedures to be used in the site-specific PMP study for the <br />Cherry Creek Dam and Reservoir. In assembling the available technologies available for <br />this project, A W A has identified a promising relatively new technique which could be <br />used to provide the improved procedure. The use a mesoscale meteorological model for <br />storm analyses, transpositioning and maximization could potentially provide a quantum <br />improvement in PMP computations, particularly in conjunction with the above <br />components (hydrologic modeling and use of paleoflood data). <br />The Utah Climate Center is using the National Center for Atmospheric Research <br />(NCAR) mesoscale meteorological model, called the MM5, to simulate the rainfall from <br />historic storms at the location and under the atmospheric conditions that actually occurred <br />with the storm. Parameters within the MM5 model are adjusted until the rainfall pattern <br />and amount are closely simulated by the model. Using these parameter values, the storm <br />is then moved within the model to the location of the basin being studied in the site- <br />specific PMP study and the model is rerun using the location and topography of the basin. <br />This procedure is utilizing state-of-the-science technology to refine the transpositioning <br />procedure used historically in PMP studies. Maximization can also be provided by the <br />MM5 model for the transpositioned storm. The results from using the MM5 will be <br />compared to the historic methods used for maximization and transpositioning. <br />Differences will be evaluated to determine if the MM5 approach provides improved <br />analyses results. This approach is being used by A WAin a site-specific PMP study in <br />Maine. The primary storms to be modeled using the MM5 are the Plum Creek storm of <br />1965 and the Cherry Creek storm of 1935. The results from the modeling effort will be <br />incorporated into <br />Task 6. <br />
