Also send a copy to Denny Bohen, USFS, Morrison, telephone is
275-5610. Thanks]

rj

I will be on vacation until August 5th; following is a summary of the 7/28
flooding. I have already called Judy Paratt (Jeff County) and NWS with
this info. These data support the June 6, 1997 rainstorm flooding that the
burned area at Buffalo Creek still is responding like last year. It is
reasonable to expect that a 1-1.5 inch rain in 1-2 hours over the burned
area sometime this summer, which could produce substantial flood runoff
(perhaps >1,000 cfs in Buffalo Creek). Unburned areas had minimal runoff.

I visited Buffalo Creek today after hearing from Fred Wendelken (BC
resident) this morning. As best as I can tell the rain was limited to
Shinglemill Creek, Spring Gulch, and Sand Draw. Amounts ranged from -0.5"
(USFS gage at work station and about the same at the USGS Buffalo Creek
gage) to 0.6" (Wendelken's) in 30 min (- 7:45 to 8:15 pm) after some
antecedent RF (USFS gage had a total of -0.75 inches). I did not get into
Spring Creek basin (Moody/Martin site), but I am sure they can provide a
summary of conditions there. [Greg, could you send me the RF data for your
gages. Tom, I asked Judy Paratt to have someone contact BC RF observers as
you likely will be tied up with Ft Collins flooding.]

Peak discharges, _approximate_ at this point and will be calculated later, are:

Buffalo Creek u/s from Shinglemill Creek -- 25 cfs
Shinglemill Creek @ BC-- 200 cfs
Buffalo Creek u/s Sand Draw -- 400 cfs
Sand Draw @ mouth -- 125 cfs
Buffalo Creek @ USGS gage -- 500 cfs
The gage ht = 6.9 ft = 2.1 ft higher (based on 4 HWM measurements near
gage) than @ 1 :30 pm today (4.80 ft); after Greg Smith's gage visit.

Greg, I surveyed a cross section (through the staff gage) and will get it
to you next week.

Bob Jarrett

ps, Nolan Doesken indicated he has a confirmed 9.5"/4.5 hours in Spring
Creek basin at Fort Collins (Taft Hill and Drake). This followed 3.6
inches of rain (at that location) from sunday night to monday am.

Page 1
