EM 1110-2-1913
31 Mar 78

.

successful past projects that can be followed in levee
used as a base for developing more specific procedures
ular project. Such a procedure is given in table 1-1.
implementing this procedure is presented in subsequent

sign and can be
r any partic-
nformation for
c apters.

""01

(4) The method of construction must also be consid red. In the

Table 1-1. General Design Procedure

Step Procedure

1 Conduct geological study based on a thorough review of av ilable data in-
cluding analysis of aerial photographs. Initiate preli inary subsur-
face explorations.

2 Analyze preliminary exploration data and from this s establish
preliminary soil profiles, borrow locations, and ent sections.

3 Initiate final exploration to provide:

a. Additional information on soil profiles.
b. Undisturbed strengths of foundation materials.
c. More detailed information on borrow areas and other required
excavations.

4 Using the information obtained in Step 3:

a. Determine both embankment and foundation soil param ters and
refine'preliminary sections where needed, noting 11 possible
problem areas.
b. Compute rough quantities of suitable material and r fine borrow
area locations.

5 Divide the entire levee into reaches of similar foundatio conditions,
embankment height, and fill material and assign a typic 1 trial
section to each reach.

6 Analyze each trial section as needed for:

a. Underseepage and through seepage.
b. Slope stability.
c. Settlement.

7 Design special treatment to preclude any problems as dete mined
from Step 6.

8 Based on the results of Step 7, establish final sections or each reach.

9 Compute final quantities needed; determine final borrow a ea locations.

10 Design embankment slope protection.

.

Ie

1-2

.
