discussions centered on the use of public art, and involved
representatives of the Arts Center and Arts Council, as well
as several Riverfront Commission members and other
community leaders.
For a perspective on the natural river environment, Grant
Jones had the benefit of discussions and tours with several
local experts from State and Federal agencies. After ground
tours, the group toured a long stretch of the river corridor
in a jet boat, exploring as far as the scenic canyons near the
Utah border.
Representatives of Urban Edges and Duane Holmes focused
on recreation and amenity development. Local insight was
provided by representataives from State Division of Parks and
Outdoor Recreation, City Parks and Recreation Department,
City Planning Department, and a local landscape architect.
The information provided in these interviews necessitated
a second ground tour of specific riverfront sites. Although
originally scheduled to meet in their respective subgroups, the
team later found it much more beneficial to combine work

8

sessions. This gave them a chance to exchange ideas and
expertise as well as share information gathered in the interviews
and tours.

After an intensive day brainstorming and sketching out
ideas, the team presented its overall conceptual plan for the
Riverfront Project at a public meeting. The audience was
impressed by the team's accomplishments.

The team accomplished what it set out to do: To provide
a vision for redevelopment of the Grand Junction Riverfront.
If there is any criticism of the process, it would be that the
site visit was too short. However, additional costs of extending
the visit were prohibitive. The team did an exceptional job
reviewing background material sent to them, and delving in-
to the community and riverfront in a very shorr time, The
result was a strengthening of community commitment and
excitement for the revitalization of the riverfront. Chapters
Three through Five are individual reports written by- team
members - after the site visit.
