There are erosion and sediment deposition problems on the Stony
Creek alluvial fan in the northern part of the county near Tehama.
!The county is not aware of any other alluvial fan except Stony Creek. The county has no specific
definition or classification system for identifying or classifying alluvial fans.
Contact Ms. Basia Trout, Bureau of Reclamation, (530) 529-3980, for further information about alluvial
fans in Glenn County.

CountyName Contact Title/Position
Humboldt County Don Tuttle Public Works Director
rreleohone
(707) 445-7741
10/23/98 contacted Mr. Tuttle. The community of Ferndale is located on an alluvial fan on the
southern edge of the Eel River delta, in the northwest part of the county.
--
Ferndale experienced flooding during the winter of 1996 and 1997. Approximately 7 feet of debris and
sediment deposited over the community.
Earthquake activity which loosens soil also contributed to erosion and deposition. Debris and
sediment clogged the river on the mouth of Francis Creek in the mountains above the community.
!There are visible contour lines of fan formation on and above the community. The county is interested
in obtaining information and guidelines regarding alluvial fan management practices and a
classification system.

Attachment 2 - Appendix A

6
