The
complete agenda is included in Appendix B.

Pre-Workshop Special Sessions

While the workshop was advertised as beginning on Tuesday, January 24, it actually began
on Monday, January 23 with training for the workshop facilitators and a special hands-on
session for the city of Davenport. These special sessions are useful to bring participants up-
to-speed and to provide orientation for non-local facilitators.

Facilitator Preparation. The Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program of the
National Park Service was the source for the workshop facilitators. Their mission is to
advocate and assist community-based conservation action. Facilitation of community
plan.ntng groups is one of their essential roles. Since the National Park Service was a
workshop sponsor, they were able to provide skilled staff from around the country.

The facilitators were instrumental to the delivery and the success of the workshop. The
workshop employed 12 skilled facilitators. They ensured that session discussions remained
focused, directed participants in the discussion of specific topics, provided feedback to the
Conference Coordinator, and offered suggestions to workshop planners regarding redirecting
future sessions based on the response of the participants.

Objective. This session ensures that the facilitators understand the workshop goals and
objectives, their role in each aspect of the workshop, the various players involved, and the
overall organization that is planned.

Session Content. The session content focused on the above concepts, plus the mechanics
of combining flip-charts (used by the facilitators to record the issues and points of each
session) into a computerized master workshop-list, coordinating audio-visual equipment
needs, and making room assignments. It was agreed that certain facilitators would be
responsible for gathering the appropriate data and transmitting it to the workshop leaders
