CDI\II

Castle Pines North Metropolitan District
Application for Water Efficiency Grant

3. Closely monitor District irrigation on parks and open space:

. Maintain 2005 irrigation levels on parks and drip irrigation (District irrigation
of parks and open space were metered for the first time in 2005).

. Reduce open space irrigation by an additional 10 percent (5.9 AFY) with a
total outdoor District usage not to exceed 93 AFY (District metered usage in
2005 was 98.9 AF).

4. Provide assistance to the HOAs in reducing irrigated turf by 25 percent.

5. Select conservation measures and prog~ams that are compatible with the
community. .

6. Establish a monitoring system that collects a sufficient amount of data to
effectively measure the success of conservation programs and measures on an
annual basis.

These goals were developed with the intention of providing an optimal range of
target savings, while also facilitating the ability to easily measure the success of the
plan on an annual basis.

3.0 Irrigation Management System Overview

CALSENSE water management system products have been available on the market
since 1986. A variety of technical features have been added to these systems providing
greater central control and improved irrigation efficiencies. These systems have been
installed throughout the United States including California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas,
Utah, and New Mexico. Under the proposed project, the District would be one of the
first providers in Colorado to use a CALSENSE irrigation management system
(Irrigation Management System). Under the proposed project, the District would
implement the Irrigation Management System in a series of District-owned and
operated parks and would document observed differences in water use associated
with implementation of the Irrigation Management System.

3.1 Major Components

The District has been working with Ewing Irrigation, a CALSENSE distributor, in
determining the equipment needed to best meet the District's irrigation management
needs. The District plans to purchase the following major components:

· Weather Station - Station would be installed at an optimal location in the District
service area. This station would measure weather parameters such as temperature,
wind speed, and radiation used to estimate evapotranspiration (ET). Daily ET rates
would be estimated and used to regulate irrigation application rates. The weather
station would also measure precipitation and can be used to regulate irrigation
application rates.

8

C;',COClJt.lENTS AND SETTINGS\BI.ACKCA\DESKTOPlCPNGRANT\WATER EFFICIENCY GRANT PROGRAM APPUCATION.OOC
