<br />Historical Perspectivos on Colorado Drought <br /> <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />regional drought occurrence. An ex.tensive review by the Colorado Climate Center <br />on drought's cyclicity was inconclusive. So can you believe what you want'? <br />An example of how new information can be developed through "database mining" <br />can be seen in Table 6. Table 6 shows a comparison from 1900 to 1999 of decadal <br />occurrences of basin-spcci fie annual precipitation that is 2 inches or more above or <br />below average. The base annual precipitation information was derived from Western <br />Regional Climate Center database. Let's look at two fresh approaches to viewing the <br />information <br /> <br />2"01 <br /> <br />Tobie 6: Comparison of the Number of Annual Basin Precipitations +/- <br />Average/Decade <br /> <br />-- <br />" <br />. <br />. <br />'" <br />o <br />o <br />~ <br /> <br />. <br />-. <br />. <br />'" <br /> <br />-3 <br />o <br />2 <br />11 <br />12 <br />.12 <br /> <br />, <br />14 <br />19 <br />16 <br />25 <br />74 <br /> <br />A <br />11 <br />19 <br />" <br />14 <br />62 <br /> <br />, <br />1 <br />1 <br />o <br />2 <br />4 <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />m <br /> <br />A <br />3 <br />3 <br />2 <br />6 <br />14 <br /> <br />, <br />o <br />1 <br />o <br />o <br /> <br />. <br />Ii! <br /> <br />A <br />o <br />5 <br />o <br />2 <br />1 <br /> <br />, <br />1 <br />2 <br />4 <br />4 <br />11 <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />~ <br /> <br />A <br />o <br />o <br />o <br /> <br />, <br />5 <br />3 <br />4 <br />o <br />12 <br /> <br />. <br />iil <br /> <br />A <br /> <br />o <br />2 <br /> <br />, <br />2 <br />4 <br />5 <br />5 <br />, <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />~ <br /> <br />A <br />o <br />2 <br />, <br />o <br />3 <br /> <br />, <br />o <br />o <br />o <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />~ <br /> <br />A <br /> <br />, <br />5 <br />3 <br />3 <br />9 <br />20 <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />M <br /> <br />A <br /> <br />o <br /> <br />3 <br /> <br />Arkansas <br />Rio Grande <br />Total <br />Difference <br /> <br />4 <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />o <br />2 <br /> <br />.12 <br /> <br />A = Years with annual basin <br />precipitation of equal to or <br />greater than 2" above <br />average. <br /> <br />B = Years with annual basin <br />precipitation of equal or <br />greater value than 2" below <br />average. <br /> <br />_ll_I'Ilu. <br />-COlo.ado <br />_A.......... <br />-'-RlOGfrcle <br /> <br />, <br /> <br /> <br />-, <br /> <br />l..O.C.adu <br /> <br />Figure 21 - Comparison of the difference between the numbers of annual basin <br />precipitation years. 2" above and 2" below average summed by decade and by basin. <br /> <br />Page 24 <br /> <br />HOR Engineering, Inc. <br />Printed on 30% post-consumer recycled content paper <br /> <br /> <br />B <br />o <br />1 <br />o <br />o <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />N <br /> <br />A <br />2 <br />4 <br />4 <br />2 <br />12 <br /> <br />, <br />o <br />o <br />o <br />o <br />o <br /> <br />. <br />'" <br />- <br /> <br />A <br />3 <br />3 <br />3 <br />I <br />10 <br /> <br />, <br />o <br />4 <br />o <br />4 <br />8 <br /> <br />. <br />8 <br /> <br />A <br />o <br />, <br />2 <br />o <br />3 <br /> <br /> <br />10 <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />.10 <br /> <br />Table 6 shows some interesting basin-specific information but let's concentrate for <br />the moment on the big picture. The droughts of the 1930's. 1950's and the 1970's <br />show up signilicant decades of below average precipitation in Colorado's major river <br />basins. Wet periods also show up clearly. Note the drought of the 1950's was not <br />"as sync" from basin to basin as during the othcr droughts. Of equal importance is <br />the plotting of the deeadal changes from basin to basin as shown in Figure 7. <br /> <br />Bul..D <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />.13 <br /> <br />5 <br /> <br />d.cad. <br /> <br />18 <br /> <br />f.r.ncup.' <br /> <br />11 <br /> <br />o <br /> <br />-5 <br /> <br />-, <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />-, <br /> <br />-, <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />n_ <br /> <br />-. <br />
