000584

Summary Of Hydrologic ReQuirements

The following requirements are typicQlly Qccepted hydrologic requirements used in
eVQluQtion Qnd design of whitewQter courses thQt are used for competition:

. Course must contQin sufficient flow to be navigQble for its entire length.
. The course must consist of naturQI Qnd/or artificiQI obstQcles to create
whitewQter feQtures for the minimum flow rate intended for the RICD reach.
. The site must be able to support Q competition "without annoyance or
inconvenience to the competitors.-

ArtificiQI"pumped- courses tQke their cue from the grQvity flow courses, tuning their
flow and drop to provide Q reasonable recreation experience with strong considerQtion
for pumping costs. ArtificiQI courses Qre therefore the most Qccurate measure of Q
reasonable experience, because the boating public must pay to participate. Presumably,
if the recreQtion experience Qt Qn QrtificiQI"poy for- course WQS unacceptQble, then
QttendQnce would decrease to non-profitable levels. The following table provides
eXQmples of existing QrtificiQI "pumped- courses with their design flow rQtes.

Flow Rates for Artificial "Pumped- Circulation Courses
Low flow (ets) HiQh flow (cf,!l
200 600

210 500

250 470

Dickerson, MD
La Seu d'Urgell, SpQin*
Penrith Lakes, AustrQIiQ

Flow Rates for Other Courses Worldwide
Low flow (ct~) HicJh flow (~s)
Unknown 500
50 500
300 800

350 490
180 1000

East Race, South Bend, USA
Confluence Park, USA
Mississippi WhitewQter Park
Augsburg,Germany
Holme Pierrpont, UK

* Note: This course hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics, the 1993,1994,1996, and 1998 World
Cup Slalom Events, the 1999 Wodd Slalom Championships, and numerous local and regional
boating events.

10
