000583

Sample Computations For Recommended RICD Flow Rate Ranqe

Based on the information provided in the .Summary Of Selected Technical
Requirements For Artificial Whitewater Courses., the CWCB has based, in part, its
recommendation for destination-oriented RICD flow rates on the following:

Lower end flow rate* = 0.5 feet x 16.5 feet x 6.6 feet/second = 54 cfs

Upper end flow rate* = 3.0 feet x 16.5 feet x 6.6 feet/second = 326 cfs

*Flow rates computed using continuity equation, Q=AV, where;
Q = stream discharge in cubic feet per second.
A = cross-sectional area of stream in square feet (depth x width in this case).
V = average streamflow velocity in feet per second.

The computed low and high-end flow rates of 54 cfs and 326 cfs, respectively, support
the CWCB's recommended RICD flow range of 50 cfs to 350 cfs for destination-
oriented boating courses. The upper end flow rate (326 cfs) accounts for the depth
required to perform a safe Eskimo roll at a given stream section assuming a reasonable
width for recreational kayaking activities (A 16.5 foot width was used here as the
recommended width for a 2 person canoe to safely turn sideways). The lower end flow
rate (54 cfs) accounts for the depth to float a boat at a given stream section assuming
a width necessary to allow a two person canoe to turn sideways.

The eWeB is aware that the above computations are based on slalom course
recommendations that were published in 1989. Unfortunately, there does not seem to
be a published or accepted source of more current information for design criteria
related to rodeo or play boating courses, and therefore the eweB has attempted to
develop guidelines using a variety of sources as stated in the main body of this
document.

9
