No surplus releases will be made during the
water year unless flood control operations dictate that additional
releases are required.

Surplus releases from Lake Mead are separated into three categories.
The first category is additional water for MWD and CAP. The second
category is additional water for Mexico. And the third category is
additional water for power generation and operational flexibility.
Category one surpluses can range from 300 to 1,300 KAF/yr. Category
two surpluses can be as high as 200 KAF/yr. Category three surplus
releases can only be made if the computed annual Lake Mead surplus
release is greater than category one plus category two surplus
demands. 'Again, surplus releases cannot exceed 13,400,000 acre~
feet/year.

Category one and two surpluses (additional water to MWD, CAP, and
Mexico), are determined on October 1 for all months in the year.
Category three surpluses (additional releases for power generation)
are determined on October 1 for only the months of October through
March. From April through September, category three surplus releases
are dictated by flood control requirements.

6. Compute the maximum surplus possible for CAP and MWD. Both must
take an equal share of surplus. If CAP cannot take surplust then MWD

12
