The capacity of the facility to hold and grow fish is expressed in term.s of pounds
of fl$h or toto.l biomass. :

Brood.tock . Fish of a particular species, reprosented by bolh sexes which are held In
captivity until and during maturity for the distinct purpose of cr;ossbreeding. The genetic
history Is usually known for these animals and they are usua~ly bred according to strict
protocols designed to maintain a level of genetic diversity iln the progeny. F"or the
purposes of this facility, rafugla and brood stock populations ~re considered the same.

Culture Techniques - Different methodologies which are used: to hatch and produce fish.
For this report, the two categories of culture techniques ~re intensive culture and
extensive culture. :

extensive Culture - A culture methodology which tJrnptU:l~IZtJ5 IIIUI tJ r Il:slural rearing
t.'Onditions for fish Ulat are reared in an arUnclal envlronnient. Under extonsive culture
condillons fish are reared at low donSity in outdoor ponds.: Reerlng Is conductod at
ambient lemperatures and natural feed ilel1l5 are enc:ouroged to grow In tho pond
environment. This strategy Is employed to alleviate hatchery, Induced pressures which
may work selectively on the genetic diversity of the fish bei~9 cultured. This method
requires less water and more land than intensive oulture. !

Intonslve Culture. A oulture methodology designed to aohlev~ maximum productivity for
fish held In artificial culture environments. The fish are held .t higher densities In tanks
or raceways and fed an artificial diet. Rearing temperatures Bre held at values which are
known to achieve maximum growth rates. Water flow rate ~re high to maintain water
quality by carrying away waste producls, and excess feed. Ttle primary goal of Imensive
culture is to achieve maximum fish production levels for a given rearing space while
maintaining healthy stocks of fish. i

Relugl8 - Individual fiSh representing genetically distinct sto~kS 01 a particular sp8cte~
held In captive habitat.
