Irrigation of approximately 514,000 acres of farmland in Mexicali and San Luis Valleys
coupled with municipal and industrial uses in urban centers such as Mexicali, San Luis-Rio
Colorado, Tecate, and Tijuana-Rosarito constitute the primary demand for Colorado River
water in the northern Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora.

. In the early 1940's an estimated 330,000 acres of land in the Mexicali Valley were irrigated for
agricultural purposes (Hundley, 1966).

. The Rio Colorado Irrigation District (District 14) reported a combined total of 502,000 acres of
irrigated land in 1996-1997, and 424,500 acres of irrigated land in 1997-1998 for Mexicali and
San Luis Valleys.

. In 1999, demand for Colorado River water by municipal and industrial (M&I) users in Mexicali,
Tecate, and Tijuana-Rosarito was approximately 100,000 AF. Future M&I demands are
expected to be met with Colorado River water by implementing proposed conservation
measures (e.g. reduced transmission losses) and the acquisition of irrigation rights (Baja State
Water Commission, "Water Supply in Blocks for Domestic Use in the County Seats ofthe State
of Baja California, 2000-2025", July 2000).
