Comments and Suggestions <br />To: IBCC Public Education/Participation/Outreach Work <br />Group <br />From: IBCC, Roundtables, Others <br />Thru: September 12, 2006 <br /> <br />PUBLIC EDUCATION <br />Work directly with those who conduct land use hearings to provide co ncurrent water education <br />Displays at state fairs in similar vein to children’s water festivals <br />Children’s water essay contests with cash prizes <br />Tabulate histories of existing water supply storage and how long it took to develop it <br />Local water provider education about water to their customers along with their required water <br />quality reports <br />Water is complicated. How educate about highly technical topics? <br />Get the message across in cartoon format! <br />Coordinated series of press releases and op - ed pieces on key issues submitted locally by <br />roundtable members <br />Speakers’ bureau for radio and TV talk shows and public access shows <br />Meetings across the state at the local level between roundtable/IBCC members and editorial <br />boards <br />Meetings with city councils and c ounty commissioners in work sessions on local water needs <br />and concerns <br />Develop presentations which could be given to service clubs by roundtable members <br />Leverage existing activities by other entities rather than duplicate what is already happening <br />FIRS T: Establish clear goal on what we are trying to achieve to avoid spending time/effort with <br />little result. <br />Compilation of entities providing water education summarizing what they do (avoid duplication) <br />We need an active means to inform public of roundta ble/IBCC deliberations/decisions, not just <br />website. <br />Reasonably publicize roundtable and IBCC deliberations <br />Make the website user friendly and not too overwhelming <br />Target non - traditional groups, specifically those underrepresented in the process. They ha ve <br />active, motivated members already tuned into the issues but could benefit from more education <br />to reach out to their organizations more effectively <br />You will get more mileage educating active groups who are working on water issues than <br />educating the gene ral public <br />Communicate via email with NGO’s and local governments for initial group of potentially <br />interested individuals, e.g. Citizen Water Advisory Committees of Denver Water Board and City <br />of Boulder, groups interested in maintaining community <br />Press releases about meetings/agenda not just to print media but to radio and TV as well <br />Press releases especially important with roundtable is considering funding projects <br />Op - eds must be done with care to ensure that personal/institutional opinions/agendas no t <br />presented as general agreement <br />Roundtable members should communicate back to those they represent, sharing links to 1177 <br />website <br /> 9 <br />
