G027J7

CURRENTS

2

LAKEWOOD VISTA CONDOMINIUMS

Ken Wright and Patricia Flood were preparing
for expert testimony in a construction deficiency
claims lawsuit when Lynn Dolven of Dewhirst
& Dolven notified us of a settlement.

WWE represented the developer/builder and
evaluated the claims made by the homeowners'
association in regard to grading and drainage.
We used the talents of Chuck Haines for many
of the detailed field inspections.

NEW DURANGO OFFICE STAFF

Brenna West and Alissa Krochenski have joined
the Durango office as full-time staff members.
Brenna, a degreed environmental biologist,
began full-time work on January 3 and works on
wetland, wildlife, and water quality issues.

Alissa has a bachelor's degree in environmental
geology. She works on groundwater, water
quality, and water well jobs for WWE. Alissa is
a graduate. of Fort Lewis College and was
named "Outstanding Senior" of the Geology
Department in 2003. We are proud to have
Brenna and Alissa on our technical team.

PRETREATMENT FLOW MEASUREMENT

WWE was pleased to complete the annual flow
meter calibration for Microsemi Corporation's
industrial wastewater pretreatment facility.
With assistance from Microsemi' s staff, timed
volumetric measurements were compared to the
flow meter output to develop a calibration
curve. The meter was found to provide accurate
accounts of the discharge.

We have performed this calibration for at least
six years, and Dave Foss thanks Microsemi's
Corbet Thomas for the ongoing assignment.

DENVER ART MUSEUM

The Denver Art Museum held a seminar on the
prehistoric Tiwanaku Empire at Lake Titicaca
January 14 and 15. Ruth and Ken Wright, who
represented WWE, felt the program was
outstanding. Curator Margaret Young Sanchez
did a fabulous job of bringing in international
experts for the occasion.

The Tiwanaku Empire is noted for its art and its
raised-mound fanning system. The empire
exhibited innovative prehistoric agriculture that
was highly successful at an altitude of 12,000
feet. The agricultural field design captured the
sun's heat to ward offnighttime frost.

LOWER ARKANSAS RIVER

Patricia Flood inspected a ditch system and
irrigated lands along the lower Arkansas River
in. January. Our work relates to the appraisal of
water rights that may be placed in conservation
easements.

WWE thanks Peter Nichols of Trout, Witwer &
Freeman for the assignment.

DAM SPILLWAY DESIGN FLOODS

Thanks to the dam experts at the State
Engineer's Office (SEO), WWE is progressing
well with preliminary designs for the Long
Hollow Reservoir in the La Plata River basin.

Spillway design floods for dam designs
sometimes result in uncertainties because of the
inherent approximate nature of maximum
probable flood hydrology. Since the SEO judged
Ken Wright's initial spillway estimate of 50,000
cubic feet per second to be overly conservative, it
has been reduced with detailed computer
analysis.

WWE/WEI

""::"
