002'7~8

CURRENTS

6

ARKANSAS RIVER TRANSFER SETTLED

We thank Steve Malott and Wayne Whittaker of
the Catlin Canal Company of Rocky Ford for
the two-year-Iong opportunity to assist them
regarding Aurora's transfer of water out of the
Arkansas River. Chuck Haines of WWE
handled the assignment, which included
analyzing long-distance exchanges,
understanding the needs of Arkansas River
irrigators and protecting the future interests of
the Catlin Canal.

Chuck worked closely with Aurora's engineer
Ross Bethel, former United States Geological
Survey hydrologist Russ Livingston, Division
Engineer Steve Witte, and Assistant Division
Engineer Steve Kastner on technical aspects of
the exchanges. Attorneys Kevin Kinnear for
Catlin and Austin Hamre for Aurora facilitated
the extended negotiations, with key participation
by Tom Simpson. The March settlement with
Aurora was good for all parties involved.

THORNTON CONSTRUCTION CLAIM

Thanks to Robert Carlson of White and Steele,
WWE had the opportunity to analyze the facts
related to a Thornton city water pipeline that
was laid too shallow. Our detailed
investigation, study, and report showed that the
consulting engineer named as the defendant
performed his work in a reasonable and prudent
manner and that the engineering firm was
improperly blamed for the pipeline problem.

Ken Wright and Patricia Flood analyzed all
aspects of the project and concluded that the
problem related to work done by several other
parties as far back as 10 years ago.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRESENTATION

The West Woods Elementary School invited
Jennifer Jones and Rachel Pittinger of WWE to
give a presentation on the water cycle, water
quality, water supply, and water conservation.
Representatives of WWE have made
presentations at the school for four years.

TAYLOR AUTO & RV CENTER

Waste Engineering, Inc. is completing a Phase I
Environmental Site Assessment and
underground storage tank evaluation for the
Taylor Auto & RV Center In Glenwood Springs.
Craig Heydenberk of our Glenwood Springs
office performed the work. We would- like to
thank Bob Hinkey of Aspen Land and Homes
and Paul GruJ'>er for the assignment.

ETHICS IN BUSINESS AWARDS

Several WWE staff members attended an Ethics
in Business Awards luncheon on March 24. The
650 attendees heard a terrific lecture by Rhodes
scholar James O'Toole, who explained how
ethics and profits are compatible. Besides being
a Gold Sponsor of the event, WWE was an award
recipient in 1996!

BASALT MIDLAND ADDITION

Craig Heydenberk of our Glenwood Springs
office completed a Phase I Environmental Site
Assessment for the Town of Basalt.

Waste Engineering, Inc. would like to thank
Jody Edwards of Klein, Cote, and Edwards in
Aspen and Basalt Community Development
Director Glenn Hartman for this assignment.

WWE/WEI
