I' ~

002715

3

CURRENTS

SOMBRERO MARSH SUCCESS

The Boulder Sombrero Marsh is an
environmental education center and the location
of the Thorne Ecological Institute's
headquarters. WWE helped save the valuable
marsh via chemistry and working with nature!

A representative of the Boulder County Health
Department telephoned Ken Wright in 1998 to
inquire about suspected high levels of hydrogen
sulfide gas (H2S). The Health Department was
concerned that a trailer park adjacent to
Sombrero Marsh would have to be evacuated.

Dr. Robert Weiner and Ken used a sensitive H2S
meter to check residential-area gas levels, which
measured 1 to 2 parts per million. WWE
professionals then analyzed the area's history
using aerial photographs, performed a total gas
survey, and waded through the marsh. We
established the source of the H2S: black gunk at
the edge of the water. The evacuation was
cancelled, and a management plan was adopted
that called for occasional low water periods to
emulate natural conditions.

CALIFORNIA TRIBE HIRES WWE

The Rincon Luiseno Band of Indians in northern
San Diego County retained WWE last month.
Eric Boos of our Durango office is preparing a
non-point source assessment and report for the
tribe with Tribal Administrator Rob Shaffer and
Environmental Program Director Kristie Orosco
and their staff.

The report will address issues such as impacts
from nitrates that are derived from septic
systems? horses and cattle, agriculture, and
erosion. Significant erosion throughout the
reservation has resulted from the substantial
rainfall received since late 2004.

WILSON MINE RECLAMATION

Reclamation of more than 100 acres of mine spoil
at Umetco's Wilson Vanadium Mine near Hot
Springs, Arkansas will begin in the next few
months. Approvals have been obtained from the
Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality
and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The bidding process is complete, and final award
to the contractor is pending. Dave Jubenville,
Dave Mehan, Jeff Nelson, and Rachel Pittinger of
WWE enjoy working with Umetco on this
rewarding project.

CALENDAR AWARDS

WWE's 2005 Machu Picchu calendar won a
national prize in the Calendar Marketing
Association's "most original" category. Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Illinois took first place in
this category.

Under the world calendar category competition,
we received an ~ward for best graphic design.
In the past, we have won awards for best scenic
photography, but for 2005 we chose to use
artwork by the National Geographic magazine.
Overall top winners included Mutual of Omaha
and the Utah Travel Council.

If you need another 2005 calendar, just call
Deana at 303-480-1700.

ASPEN AREA WATER SUPPLY

Wayne Lorenz of WWE has commenced design
engineering work on a new water supply source
for the Pitkin Iron P.U.D. near Aspen. The new
well will have a capacity of about twice that of
the first well, which Semrau Building Design had
drilled under a contract with Shelton Drilling
Company.

WWE/WEI
