,..

'\'

GreenCO Three-year Plan

,.
,
'l

Phase I (November 2001 - June 2002) .

The first phase of the Best Management Practices project will be the development of a basic comprehensive
reference/resource guide that describes refined and prioritized BMPs. CSU Extension agents will help
provide research support for this product. Highlights form this practical guide will be distributed to GreenCO
members and their customers. GreenCO will develop a central contact site to "house" the BMPs and other
project-related information. The central contact site will provide resources so that any Green Industry
business or consumer can obtain information developed to date about BMPs, wise water practices and their
benefits to businesses and the industry as a whole. Concurrently, the Industry Outreach and Marketing
project will develop targeted messages, based on focus group input, and a set of communications tools
describing why it is good business to be proactive in terms of water conservation and quality, and how
businesses can improve their practices toward those ends.

Phase II (July 2002 - December 2002)

The communications tools developed through the Industry Outreach project will lay the foundation for the
BMP project's second phase. In this phase, GreenCO will facilitate an industry-wide discussion of the
prioritized BMPs, gain consensus and agreement on specific BMPs, and formally adopt agreed upon BMPs.
Currently GreenCO members have no common management practices standard; a set of commonly identified
and agreed upon BMPs will establish such a standard for the Green Industries.

Phase III (2003-2004)

The final phase will be the incorporation of the BMPs into targeted marketing efforts and existing industry
certification programs. Industry members that meet certain BMP training criteria may earn, for example, a .
"blue seal" of industry approval that will let consumers know they are knowledgeable about wise water
techniques and practices. GreenCO will leverage this type of certification plan, through its marketing and
outreach efforts, to help increase public demand for and interest in businesses that practice BMPs. Outreach
efforts will include the use of CSU Extension agents to help engage constituencies in diverse regions.
GreenCO will then develop implementation strategies for Green Industry businesses and thereafter develop
an evaluation component to assess the program's impact on water quality and conservation.

.

Colorado Water Conservation Board
Flood Protection.
