The land in the watershed is privately
owned.

Soils

The watershed is located in the narrow floodplain valley of the Yampa River. The soils
in the watershed are the Apmay-Manbow Complex and the Frolic soil series. (See
appendix B for more detail.)

Climate

The climate of the study area is characterized by moderate precipitation, substantial
evaporation, moderate humidity, low to moderate winds, and a moderate daily range in
temperature. At Hayden, the mean annual temperature is 42 deg. F. with the mean
January temperature of 17 deg. F. and the mean high July temperature of 85 deg. F.
and the mean low temperature of 47 deg. F. The average time between killing frosts is
75 to 95 days. The last killing frost in the spring generally occurs in early June and the
first killing frost occurs in late August.

The mean annual precipitation at Hayden is 16.7 inches. Approximately 50 to 60
percent of the annual precipitation falls as rain during the growing season.

Economic and Demographic Data

The economy of the watershed is heavily dependent on agriculture. Family farms are
the predominate type. Within the watershed boundaries there are about 34 landowners
with individual irrigated units. Nearly all of the irrigated acreage is serviced by surface
systems. Hay production and livestock operations are the major enterprises.

The Routt County economy is more diversified. Tourism including the ski industry,
mining (mainly coal), oil & gas extraction & lumbering account for the major economic
industries for the county. The headwaters of the Yampa River were in
the Ute territory, but the Yampa River basin was the meeting ground for the mountain
tribes such as the Araphoes, the Gros Ventres, and the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians of
the Great Plains. They were attracted to the basin by the abundance of big game and

Hayden 7
