PLANNING AREA

Location and Size

The Hayden Diversion Watershed is located in West Central Routt County in
Northwestern Colorado (See Map). The watershed consists of 5,142 acres. The area
parallels the Yampa River from 5 miles east of Hayden to'a mile west of Hayden and
average about 1 Y2 miles wide. Hayden (population 1,720) is 25 miles west of
Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

There are presently 5 ditch companies that irrigate the 4,121 acres in the watershed.
All irrigated water is diverted from the Yampa River. The present diversions are dozed
up 1 or 2 times annually for each of the ditches from the river bottom. The 5 ditches
have a decreed flow of:

Ditch

CFS

19.19
19.43
43.50
53.52
80.00
?. , 5'. , It

Acres

Marshall Roberts
Williams
Walker
Shelton
Gibraltar

1,r,Pt
8 fJ. ~o,
-

637
449
976
1,058
1,001
4,121

Topography

The lowest elevation (6,300 ft.) in the watershed is just west of Hayden at the end of the
irrigated area. The watershed is gently sloping and nearly all the irrigated land parallels
the Yampa River. The highest elevation in the watershed is at the eastern edge of the
watershed along the Yampa River and has an elevation of 6,400 feet.

Land Cover/Use

The land cover in the watershed is estimated in Table A:

Table A - land Cover

Land Cover

%

Acres

Cropland, irrigated (Pasture & Hayland)
Other (roads/towns/canals)

Total

80.2
19.8

100

4,121
1,021
5,142

Subdivisions pressure is occurring on private land in most of the county. It is
anticipated that there may be more pressure in the future for subdivisions to occur on

Hayden 6
