The city is named after Fountain Creek, which flows through the valley. <br />Fountain Creek originates in Ute Pass and flows through Colorado Springs, then <br />through the Fountain Valley before joining the Arkansas River in Pueblo. Fountain <br />was the area's agricultural hub of the region. Cattle and crops were transported to <br />and from Fountain by railroad. When Colorado became a state, Fountain rivaled <br />Denver for the State Capitol. <br /> <br />The City of Fountain is a home rule city in EI Paso County with a current <br />estimated population of 13,400. The City water system supplies about 5,000 taps. <br />Water is obtained from the four Fountain Creek wells and from the Fryingpan - <br />Arkansas Project. Nearly 50,000 <br />people live in the communities of Security, Widefield and the City of Fountain. The <br />City of Fountain is a Home Rule Municipality, controlled by the City Council. The <br />Fountain Water Department is an Enterprise Fund of the City of Fountain, and is not <br />subject to the Tabor Amendment. <br /> <br />As a small municipality, the City of Fountain provides water for domestic use <br />to approximately 13,370 people. Additionally Fountain supplies water to numerous <br />commercial customers ranging in size from one or two person shops to a large <br /> <br />6 <br />
