Reaulation. and Measurement

Control and Reaulation Structures

Check structures have historically been used in canal systems for both depth and flow
management. By "checking" the canal, the water level upstream of the check structure
can be set to provide the necessary water surface elevation to upstream users.
Additionally, check structures can increase and regulate in-channel storage. Efficiently
utilizing a system of checks along a canal system can help create a "pencil-thin"
reservoir and can improve "on-demand" delivery capabilities. Control of each structure is
critical for this precision of operation. Incorporating check structures and SCADA
systems for control of the delivery system is beneficial.

A radial gate manufactured by Rubicon is an example of combining control, regulation,
SCADA, and measurement into a single structure for canal conveyance improvements.
These gates can be installed in existing concrete check structures or at new locations.
SCADA is included in the gate assembly for monitoring and control of the gate. The
Rubicon gate manufacturer also reports a flow measurement accuracy of 2: 2%. For
locations where both control and flow measurement are desired, a Rubicon gate may be
the most feasible structure rather than installing a separate long-throated flume and a
separate check and gate structure. Figure 6 is a photograph of three Rubicon gates
installed in an existing check structure.

Aqua Engineering, Inc.
November 17, 2004

Canal Modernization Study
-14-
