The coming months will be
marked by an impressive array of activities. Many of the roundtables are assessing their
water interests as a basin, utilizing the information from Statewide Water Supply
Initiative (SWSI) and other studies to complete a basin wide water needs assessment,
working with Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) to analyze alternatives for
meeting identified water needs, and making recommendations on how to meet their water
needs to the IBCC. Roundtables are also positioned to analyze and respond to projects or
processes that are voluntarily brought before them by other entities.

The IBCC’s work has primarily focused on writing and submitting a Ch arter to
legislature. The IBCC’s charter was approved on April 5, 2006. This Charter will
govern and guide water negotiations between roundtables, articulate the role of the IBCC,
and form the framework and foundational principles to guide voluntary nego tiations
between roundtables. The IBCC will also guide the public education and outreach efforts
of this process. Working groups have been established to spearhead efforts with regard
to public education needs assessment and establishing criteria and gui delines associated
with grant money appropriation provided for in Senate Bill 179.

For further information contact:
Eric Hecox
Manager, Office of Interbasin Compact Negotiations
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 718
Denver , CO 80203
