The Interbasin Compact process established by the Colorado Water for the 21 Century
Act (H B - 1177) is being fully implemented with an impressive amount of energy and
interest at all levels. Nine basin roundtables are established throughout the state.
Roundtable membership is meeting the Act’s goal of being broadly inclusive. Two
hundred and ni nety nine Coloradans are serving as roundtable members bringing a
diversity of interests, backgrounds, experiences, and geographic perspectives to
Colorado’s water discussions (see Figure One). Roundtable participants also include
representatives from eig ht different state and federal agencies, and the involvement of 26
non - voting members bringing a cross - basin perspective to each roundtable. The
roundtable meetings are being held on a regular basis, are well attended, and have a high
level of discourse a nd engagement. Meetings have been marked by competitive elections
for the at - large seats, spirited debates about their decision - making and operating
procedures, and constructive analysis as members begin to examine their water interests
and how this proce ss can move the state forward. Figure Two summarizes the
roundtables’ work.
