There are three unknowns regarding this alternative. First, is the condition of the existing siphon
able to allow the sleeving process to be successful accomplished? Second, the cost associated
with the required excavation and unforeseen problems associated with this alternative cannot be
determined until actual construction begins. Third, designing the system to allow for the
approximate 37 cubic feet per second discharge at the outlet works could be difficult, especially if
a section of smaller diameter pipe (or more) is required to by-pass some obstruction(s) in the
existing siphon.

Alternative 3 - Siphon Replacement with 30-inch PVC

The siphon covers a distance of approximately 2,300 feet. Under this alternative, the siphon
would be replaced by a 30-inch PVC pipe. Excavation would require a trench of approximately
2,300 feet in length and a depth of approximately six feet deep.

Selected Alternative (Preferred Alternative)

Alternative Three - Siphon Replacement with 30 inch PVC is the preferred Alternative.

The LaPlata County Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is preparing
engineering designs and cost estimates for the project. Conceptual plans as prepared by the
NRCS will be submitted as soon as they become available. A letter and cost estimate from the
NRCS is included in Appendix C. The estimated cost of the construction is $172,903.00.

Cost Estimate

The third alternative is to replace the existing siphon with 30 inch PVC pipe. The estimated cost
for this alternative is $217,000. Table 1 shows the break down of cost associated with this
alternative.

Table 1

Alternative 3 Cost Estimates - Beaver Creek SiDhon
Item Quantity Dollar Amount
Pipe (30"X 80 PSI) 2,300 feet @ $29.00 per $ 66,700.00
foot
Installation 2,300 feet @ $10.00 per $ 23,000.00
foot
Excavation (Sloped to 3,726.85 yards @ $3.50 per $ 13,044.00
Meet a.S.H.A.
